JSTOR continuously improves its offerings to benefit our users. We integrated multimedia into the Artstor collection on JSTOR so you can experience:

  • Enhanced research: Multimedia content supports primary source research, interdisciplinary studies, and the general expansion of materials considered to be research. Dynamic content also lends itself to new discoveries via intersections and fusions of fields and ideas.

Video content

Artstor on JSTOR now features 843 videos, offering a wealth of visual content that brings subjects, events, and emotions to life. From historical footage to computer-generated contemporary art, the videos in our collections span many decades and disciplines. We’ve picked out some highlights for you, but there’s so much more to explore.

The following highlights are from the open access Wellcome Collection on Artstor on JSTOR:

This video from 1938 details the journey of international physiologists as they head to a conference in Zurich, dressed in extravagant formalwear, as was considered appropriate for air travel at the time. The group isn’t as stuffy as you might think! In fact, they’re never even shown at the conference, instead spending their time marveling at the Swiss countryside, mingling with the local Swiss who’d come to welcome them, and splashing around in the pool.

The film starts with a sheaf of paperwork being studied prior to the conference with the intertitle 'The Temptation to Go' and follows the decision to attend with the journey to Switzerland by plane. It turns out that the 'auditorium' is the hotel swimming pool packed with swimmers. The conference attendees (who are never seen actually at the conference) are seen relaxing and socialising. They have an excursion to Rapperswill; a group of researchers are described as 'Happy Hampstead', there is a sequence with Thomas Mann, other groups of unidentified conference attendees and then souvenirs which are beer mats.

In this meditative short film, artist Sop, who shielded throughout the pandemic due to preexisting medical conditions, collaborates with dance artist Michaela Gerussi and editor Kester Davies to provide an immersive experience.1

Artist Sop explores alternative strategies for self-care during the Covid-19 pandemic through a series of meditative sound works. As someone in the "clinically extremely vulnerable" category, Sop was forced to shield during the pandemic. They narrate the process of building a secret den in a cemetery at the edges of a wood near where they live. The den provides a space for respite, deeply connected to nature: a structure of protection and safety in which to take shelter. As time passes the den is no longer only used by Sop, but by others including the bees that are burrowed in the ground within the den, and a robin that visits. The dancer in this newly commissioned film represents a body in relation to the structure of the den, which is a silent witness to the performance. The title comes from an Old English folk saying to charm against the actions of fairies.

A recent video installation from 2020 titled A Lament for Power by contemporary British Ghanaian artist Larry Achiampong and British artist David Blandy explores pop culture and post-colonialism using performance to investigate the self as a fiction, devising alter egos to point at their divided selves.2 Is it a Zombie film? You be the judge.

Genetic Automata is a four-part series of video installations. The second, A Lament for Power, investigates how science can be used to understand the world – but also its commercial and political exploitation. Centring on Henrietta Lacks, and the unconsensual use of her 'immortal' cells to make world-changing discoveries such as mapping the human genome and the Polio vaccine, the work questions voices that are erased from society's narratives and in doing so, whose interests are served. Both the first and second parts employ spoken word soundtracks interspersed with imagery drawn from the contemporary video-gaming world, with specific reference to games with dystopian sci-fi narratives that in turn reference DNA ancestry and bio-terrorism."-- Summarised from documentation provided by curator.; "'Genetic Automata' is an ongoing body of video works by artists Larry Achiampong and David Blandy, exploring race and identity in an age of avatars, videogames and DNA ancestry. You can also find historical footage, such as A little goes a long way, a public service announcement from the United Kingdom’s Department of Health and Social Security in 1977 about the increasing need for blood and blood products in modern medical interventions.

This film is designed to illustrate the ever increasing need for blood and blood products. It describes modern methods of collection, testing, handling and distribution to meet not only routine demands but also specialised applications. A heart/lung machine is shown in action during an actual valve replacement operation. Examples of patients being treated with blood components are also featured. Blood components are used in the treatment of many specific conditions. The one pint of blood given by a donor is broken down into its different components which are then used to help a number of patients with differing problems.
