Amazon Web Services has awarded ITHAKA an AWS Champion for its PDF and image alt-text accessibility work for JSTOR. The AWS Champion program recognizes organizations using AWS technology in innovative ways to improve service to their communities and users.
ITHAKA and AWS worked together to adapt and deploy an on-demand system that remediates JSTOR PDFs as researchers request them, rather than converting the entire collection in advance. The recognition celebrated JSTOR’s efforts to scale document remediation, use nonprofit funds responsibly, and ensure users have access to their requested materials on demand. This work furthered ITHAKA’s commitment to expanding access to knowledge and developing practical, responsible approaches to accessibility at scale, while also providing a useful model for libraries, publishers, and other organizations managing large digital collections.
