Q. Is JSTOR ending its Demand Driven Acquisition Program (DDA)?

A. No. While JSTOR is ending DDA direct with JSTOR, we will continue to offer DDA as an ebook acquisition model, along with all other ebook acquisition models. Administrative management of the program is being handled entirely through our partner library suppliers EBSCO (GOBI) and ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS). Participants in JSTOR’s DDA program will have access to ebooks on the JSTOR platform.

Q. Why is JSTOR ending the Direct DDA program?

A. The vast majority of our participants utilize EBSCO (GOBI) and ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS) to manage their JSTOR DDA program. We have built a strong collaboration with both EBSCO and ProQuest to support DDA and feel confident this relationship will provide the best overall experience for our participants, as they offer a number of additional tools/services to make managing DDA much easier for our libraries.

Q. What are the benefits to my library with this change?

A. Managing DDA through automated workflows with EBSCO (GOBI) and ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS) will significantly simplify JSTOR DDA participation for libraries. These library providers help libraries prevent duplication and content gaps across vendors and formats, offer multi-vendor DDA workflows that update title pools based on each participant’s preferred platforms, and libraries can use the MARC records offered through these library providers.

Q. What is the timeline?

A. Institutions can migrate their direct DDA to EBSCO (GOBI) and ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS) at any time. JSTOR will cease managing direct DDA accounts on May 31, 2024. After this date, JSTOR will no longer manage or accept direct orders for new DDA accounts and will no longer accept deposit funds for existing DDA accounts.

Q. Who is eligible to transfer remaining funds in a JSTOR deposit account to EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS)?

A. JSTOR participants with balances of  $5,000 or higher at the start of the transfer process have the option to migrate funds over to a library supplier deposit account. Eligible accounts can coordinate with either their JSTOR representative or library supplier representative if this is the preferred option for leftover balance allocation.

Q. What happens to remaining direct DDA deposit funds after May 31st if we have not transferred our DDA account over to EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS)?

A. There are several options you can discuss with your JSTOR account representative:

  1. We can supply you with a usage report of books in your current corpus that have received use and purchase untriggered titles at a special savings with the remaining funds when DDA direct with JSTOR ends on May 31, 2024.
  2. The remaining funds can be applied/transferred to other JSTOR products after May 31, 2024.
  3. We will provide a refund after May 31, 2024, if there is a remaining balance and you do not use any of the other options above.

Q. Can deposit funds stay in the deposit account for a set period of time if an institution does not know what they want to do with it?

A. If an institution does not transfer to EBSCO (GOBI) and ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS) to manage their JSTOR DDA program by May 31, JSTOR can hold any remaining DDA deposit funds until Nov. 15, 2024. If a decision is not made by this time to transfer the funds to EBSCO or ProQuest, used to acquire individual ebooks, or transferred to pay for other JSTOR products, any remaining DDA deposit funds will be refunded to the institution after November 15th.

Q. Would JSTOR work with other library suppliers that have similar workflows in the future?

A. JSTOR has established workflows with EBSCO (GOBI) and ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS) to manage their JSTOR DDA program and we trust that these library providers can provide the optimal DDA experience.

Q. How will usage tracking be impacted by this transition? (What will happen to the triggers on each title in the pool – will they be retained?)

A. JSTOR will continue to track and provide usage for all titles that are currently in an institution’s DDA corpus. The usage of these titles will remain as the DDA corpus management is moved over to EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS). As an example, if a title in a DDA corpus currently has 5 item requests, this will remain when a DDA account is transferred to EBSCO or ProQuest.

Q. How will existing reports received from JSTOR change upon transfer to EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS)?

A. JSTOR currently provides usage, corpus, and transaction reporting for our direct DDA participants. When moving to support from EBSCO (GOBI) or Proquest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS), expect the following:

USAGE: Librarians can continue to access their usage reports via the JSTOR Admin Portal. Since the licensing for direct and indirect DDA Participants is identical, the admin portal experience is also identical.

TRANSACTION AND CORPUS REPORTING: JSTOR will no longer be providing weekly transaction (purchases) and/or corpus information directly to libraries, as that will be managed via the advanced tools that are available via EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest. Please discuss these tools with your EBSCO or ProQuest representative. Data transfers between JSTOR and these library suppliers may cause discrepancies, and libraries should rely on the EBSCO and ProQuest information as it relates to corpus management and transaction records. Your JSTOR representative will continue to be available to assist with questions as needed.

Q. How will the admin experience change for indirect DDA participants?

A. The same holdings and reporting information are available to indirect DDA participants as for direct DDA participants.

Holdings

Indirect DDA Participants will see DDA Holdings in their holdings dashboard, as shown in this example:

They will also continue to see DDA Purchases and DDA Corpus titles in their holdings.

Usage

Indirect DDA Participants will also see both DDA Purchases and DDA Corpus titles in their usage.

The Counter 5 Report does not distinguish DDA titles from other books, but by cross-checking it with the DDA usage you can verify that both DDACOR and DDABUY titles are present.

Q. Will we still get DDA transaction reports and DDA purchase or trigger notifications from JSTOR?

A. No, these reports will now be provided by either EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS).

Q. Will the user experience change at all?

A. No. The user will not have any change in their experience with DDA when they are transferred from JSTOR to EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS). Patrons may expect a period of downtime as their DDA is transferred from JSTOR to EBSCO or ProQuest. Please consult with your EBSCO or ProQuest representative for information on your estimated downtime.

Q. Will it be possible to keep using WorldShare collection to obtain MARC records?

A. Yes, libraries have 2 options to receive MARC records for DDA titles:

  1. Receive MARC records from our partner library suppliers EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest (Rialto and OASIS), or
  2. Receive MARC records from OCLC’s WorldShare Collection Manager – this is the existing workflow for JSTOR DDA direct MARC records with NO changes

Q. Does this impact my Evidence Based Acquisition management?

A. No. Evidence Based Acquisition is managed separately from Demand Driven Acquisition and will continue to be available directly from JSTOR.

Q. Does JSTOR offer Evidence-Based Acquisition (EBA) through EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS) partners as well?

A. Not at this time, but we do make it easy to support both models, so there isn’t duplication. EBA is managed directly through JSTOR, but you can easily combine it with the DDA you manage through EBSCO (GOBI) and ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS). If you are an EBA participant, we ensure that all titles in EBA are excluded from your DDA corpus so they are not automatically triggered if they reach the usage threshold.

Q. What will the transition look like when moving from direct over to either EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS? Will there be a lag in access when we make the change?

A. The process will work as follows:

A library confirms with EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS their intent to transfer. The library supplier notifies JSTOR of the transfer and the requested start date. JSTOR the library supplier will agree upon a transfer date (must be 48 hours more of notice). Transfers are only supported Tues-Thurs to ensure setups are successful in systems. There is typically a 24-48 hour period when the content is not accessible during the transfer process.

Q. What happens to my existing DDA savings level with JSTOR when we are transferred over to EBSCO (GOBI) or ProQuest, part of Clarivate (Rialto and OASIS)?

A. In special circumstances, there may be adjustments needed to existing tiers with EBSCO or ProQuest. Your JSTOR representative will be able to confirm what your savings tier level will be before your DDA account is transferred.
