History
State historical societies are the key collectors of historical artifacts and documents, and in many cases are publishers of journals that have made core contributions to historical scholarship. State historical journals included in this collection are a unique contribution to American history. Many of the following have been publishing for over 100 years: Massachusetts Historical Review (established 1815), The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography (established 1893), and California History (established 1927). Through collaboration with the History Cooperative, JSTOR strengthens its historical scholarship by adding over ten of the Coop’s journals to this collection. The diverse set of titles include Environmental History, Journal of World History, and Labour History.
Literature
Journals that publish original literary works alongside scholarship focused on the study of literature provides a great resource to scholars, writers, and critics. Important primary documents, such as literary reviews of the past and present, have a significant mark on literature. Literary reviews include The Hudson Review, which published essential criticism in the visual and performing arts, The North American Review, the oldest literary review in the U.S., The Kenyon Review, which has published Robert Penn Warren, Flannery O’Connor, and Robert Lowell, and The Sewanee Review, America’s oldest continuously publishing literary quarterly.
Art and art history
Museum bulletins and publications are essential in providing scholarship and vital image source material to art historians, museum studies practitioners, and art educators alike. These bulletins offer key pieces of documentation for tracking the provenance of art artifacts throughout the ages. Publications from the J. Paul Getty Museum, Walker Art Center, the Harvard Art Museums, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, are included in this collection.
