On day 1 we will look at JSTOR’s goals and the current landscape in publishing, and on day 2 we will review specifics regarding our journals and books programs.

Our guest speakers this year include Vivian Berghahn of Berghahn Books, Angela Carreño of New York University, Rob Dilworth of Duke University Press, Philipp Hess of Knowledge Unlatched, Judy Luther of Informed Strategies, Roger Schonfeld and Laura Brown of ITHAKA S+R, and John Sherer of University of North Carolina Press.

Speakers

Vivian Berghahn,
Managing Director of Berghahn Books

Vivian is Managing Director and Journals Editorial Director at Berghahn Books. In addition to overseeing the journals division at Berghahn, her managerial responsibilities include advancing the company’s online initiatives and the strategic development of its overall publishing program. With over 20 years of experience in academic publishing, she currently serves on the AAP-PSP Committee and as co-opted member of the ALPSP Council. She is currently working towards a PhD in Anthropology from the Graduate Center, CUNY.

Laura Brown,
Senior Advisor at Ithaka S+R

Laura works on a range of projects related to libraries, scholarly communication, and online learning. For ten years, Laura was the executive vice president for ITHAKA and managing director of JSTOR. Previously, she served as the managing director of Ithaka S+R. Laura is the author of University Publishing in a Digital Age, and currently serves as a trustee of the Gordon Parks Foundation and is a member of the University of the People Library Leadership group.

Angela M. Carreño,
Interim Curator for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University

After nearly two decades as the Head of Collection Development for the Division of Libraries at New York University, Angela has transitioned to an adjunct role as the Interim Curator for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Angela received the ALCTS Coutts Award for Innovation in Electronic Resources Management in 2013. Angela has served on numerous publisher library advisory boards, and is the current Chair of the Advisory Committee of the Latin Americanist Research Resources Project (LARRP).

Barbara Chin,
Director for Journals at ITHAKA

Barbara is responsible for overseeing growth of ITHAKA’s journal collections and managing publisher relationships and programs. In addition to working with publishers, she consults with librarians, faculty, and researchers to understand their research and archiving needs.

Rob Dilworth,
Journal Director, Duke University Press

Rob has worked in scholarly publishing for over 25 years, with 20 of those dedicated to journals. As Journals Director, Rob oversees the Press’s journals program and focuses on acquisitions of new titles and partnership management. He is dedicated to supporting the editorial vision of journal editors and the mission of scholarly societies, and has a keen interest in sustainable economic models for publications.

Kevin M. Guthrie,
President of ITHAKA

Kevin is an executive and entrepreneur with expertise in high technology and not-for-profit management. Kevin was the founding president of JSTOR (1995) and Ithaka (2004); the organizations merged in 2009, becoming known as ITHAKA and continuing under his leadership. Today, Kevin leads the ITHAKA staff of more than 300 people across four locations, empowering a diverse set of teams from technologists and designers to content experts and researchers.

Phillip Hess,
Head of Publisher Relations at Knowledge Unlatched

Concurrent with his position at Knowledge Unlatched, Phillip is pursuing a complimentary Master Degree at the Hochschule St.Gallen and the University of Arts Berlin in Leadership in Digital Innovation. His goal is to make knowledge accessible to everyone, everywhere, and to help shape the future dissemination of scholarly content.

John Lenahan,
Associate VP of Journals and Books at ITHAKA

John collaborates with publishers and libraries to develop products and programs that support their organizational needs and missions. He works with the more than 2,000 publishers partnered with ITHAKA to make their content available on the JSTOR platform. He also works closely with libraries to develop growth strategies for the journals and books programs to ensure we meet their research, teaching, and preservation needs.

Judy Luther,
President of Informed Strategies LLC

Judy works with all stakeholders in the design, development, and delivery of customer-oriented products and services. Her expertise in market research provides organizations with a clear picture of market opportunities and operational business models. A former President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing, she is a Chef in The Scholarly Kitchen and serves on the editorial boards of Learned Publishing, Against the Grain, and The Charleston Advisor.

Matt MacQueen,
VP of Product and Design at ITHAKA

Matt leads a growing team of product managers and designers on a mission to deliver a platform and product suite that improves and advances research and learning. Matt’s philosophy and ITHAKA’s approach focuses on deeply understanding our users and constituents and developing solutions that delight and further their work in meaningful ways.

Cristina Mezuk,
Books Licensing Editor at ITHAKA

Cristina has worked at JSTOR for over 10 years. When she joined the books program in 2015, she helped streamline various production and on-boarding workflows to help strengthen the program and make it what it is today. Recently, she moved to the editorial team, where she is responsible for licensing ebook content and managing publisher relationships.

Karen McKeown,
Director of Product Marketing at ITHAKA

Karen manages the team responsible for marketing JSTOR, Artstor, and Portico. She joined ITHAKA in November 2018 after a long career in various product management and marketing positions at Gale, a part of Cengage, OCLC, and ProQuest.

Roger C. Schonfeld,
Director of the Ithaka S+R Libraries, Scholarly Communication, and Museums Program

Roger leads Ithaka S+R’s studies of academics’ and students’ attitudes, practices, and needs, as well research on the changing role of the academic library, scholarly publisher, learned society, and museum. He also consults with libraries and library consortia, digital humanities projects, distinctive collections and centers of excellence, and scholarly publishers. Roger has served on the NSF Blue Ribbon Task Force for Sustainable Digital Preservation and Access and NISO’s Open Discovery Initiative.

Rebecca Seger,
VP of Institutional Participation and Strategic Partnerships at ITHAKA

Rebecca joined ITHAKA in 2019 and is responsible for developing our global outreach strategy and leading our team of 40 professionals dedicated to growing and managing our network of more than 11,000 library partners in 170 countries.

John Sherer,
Director of the University of North Carolina Press

Since John’s arrival, the University of North Carolina Press has published two New York Times bestsellers and has been the recipient of several major foundation grants including two grants of nearly $1 million each from the Mellon Foundation to support new scaled models for high quality monograph publications.
