The JSTOR Archive Collections currently serve more than 7,000 participating libraries and organizations in more than 150 countries. JSTOR’s continuing outreach efforts to new institutions in various communities further increase awareness of and access to the platform’s content.

Usage of the content on JSTOR exceeds 550 million significant accesses per year. In 2010 alone, 74 million journal articles were downloaded. The Worldwide Access summary  provides a snapshot of the communities driving this usage on JSTOR.

The higher education community—which includes four-year colleges, community colleges, and for-profit academic institutions—is our largest audience, composing nearly 65% of JSTOR participating libraries. In the United States, nearly every four-year higher education institution has access to at least one JSTOR Archive Collection. And 68% of higher education participation comes from outside the United States.

Libraries that never before had access to the complete back runs of the print journals included in the JSTOR Archive Collections can now offer full coverage back to the first issue. For 92% of JSTOR’s very small to medium-sized participating institutions, JSTOR offers the opportunity to access such an extensive range of content. This particularly applies to institutions participating in our African Access Initiative (AAI) and the Developing Nations Access Initiative (DNAI), which compose 14% of JSTOR’s participating libraries. These two initiatives waive or greatly reduce fees for any not-for-profit institution in developing countries and all of Africa.

JSTOR offers access options for secondary schools, government and not-for-profit research institutions, public libraries, museums, and corporations. These growing communities—which include 1,000 secondary schools, nearly every U.S. Federal Agency, and public libraries worldwide—have expanded the spectrum of JSTOR users.

Stay tuned for more information on JSTOR’s diverse participating communities. We plan to provide a more detailed view of each community in future issues of the Digest.
