JSTOR provides government and not-for-profit organizations with the depth of journal content available at large research universities.

JSTOR serves the research needs of a growing number of government & non-profit research institutions, including think tanks, foundation, development, relief, grassroots, and government organizations worldwide.  A widely recognized and heavily used online resource in the scholarly community, JSTOR is valued for its reliability, ease of use, breadth of content, disciplinary coverage, and commitment to long-term preservation.

COMMUNITY FACTS & FIGURES

  • Close to 1,000 government and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes participate in JSTOR.
  • Nearly every U.S. Federal Agency participates in JSTOR.
  • Government & not-for-profit organizations from well over 100 countries worldwide participate in JSTOR

Current Journals

JSTOR now makes a growing number of publishers to make current journal issues available via the Current Scholarship Program. Subscriptions are available for single journals as well as collections of titles, and some journals offer tiered pricing for government and not-for-profit research institutions.

Primary Sources

Through collaboration with libraries, museums, and other members of the scholarly community, JSTOR is able to provide a number of Primary Source Collections. These are multi-disciplinary and discipline-specific collections that include primary source content complementary to the journal collections. These collections include select monographs, pamphlets, manuscripts, letters, oral histories, government documents, images, 3-D models, spatial data, type specimens, drawings, paintings, and more.

The collections currently available in Government & Non-Profit Research Institutions are:

Books

Books at JSTOR makes scholarly monographs from a number of leading university presses and other academic publishers available on the JSTOR platform. Books are cross-searchable with the journal articles on JSTOR, and flexible purchase options for institutions are available.

With considerable feedback from this community, JSTOR has established a licensing methodology and fee structure that we believe to be appropriate for Government and Non-Profit Research Institutions. We arrived at a set of criteria to establish each institution's JSTOR class, ranging from "Very Large" to "Very Small." These criteria are self-reported, as are the classification criteria for the other communities that we serve.

The criteria we selected are intended to address two main considerations: (1) the research mission of the institution, and (2) the level of institutional support and commitment to research. Understanding these criteria will help us fairly license different types of research organizations, ranging from large organizations with a small research unit, to very small organizations that are devoted solely to research.

In order to determine the JSTOR classification for Government and Non-Profit Research Institutions, we consider the following five criteria:

  1. Total Staff of your organization or institution
  2. Number of researchers and library staff at your organization or institution
  3. Total Operating Budget of your organization or institution (latest year available)
  4. Materials Budget of the library of your organization or institution (latest year available)
  5. Number of active serials subscriptions (print and electronic) your organization or institution holds

Each factor is ranked on a scale of 1-8, with 1 being the low end of the range (e.g. Very Small). The classification is based on the cumulative weight. Below are tables showing each parameter and the weight associated with it:

Please contact participation@jstor.org with your library's information to assist us in determining your library's classification.

Institutions will pay two fees to participate, an Archive Capital Fee (ACF) and an Annual Access Fee (AAF). These fees vary depending upon the JSTOR Classification of your institution.

Government and Non-Profit JSTOR participants pay a one-time ACF upon initiating participation in JSTOR. The ACF is designed to ensure that JSTOR has the necessary resources to meet its archival obligation to migrate data and software systems as technology evolves. Government and Non-Profit JSTOR participants contribute an ACF upon licensing their first JSTOR collection. No further ACF is required with the licensing of subsequent collections.

Some collections require a one-time Network Participation Fee rather than an Archive Capital Fee. The Network Participation Fee (if applicable) is used for purposes broadly associated with facilitating access.

The AAF is intended to cover the ongoing costs of maintenance, user services, and administration required to support your access to collections in JSTOR. The AAF is invoiced on a calendar year basis.

For Tier One through Tier Three fees, please contact your Institutional Participation Coordinator for a fee quote.
