The largest of its kind, Global Plants (plants.jstor.org) is a community-contributed database that features more than two million high resolution plant type specimen images and other foundational materials from the collections of hundreds of herbaria around the world. It is an essential resource for institutions supporting research and teaching in botany, ecology, and conservation studies. Through Global Plants, herbaria can share specimens, experts can determine and update naming structures, students can discover and learn about plants in context, and a record of plant life can be preserved for future generations.

About Herbaria and Plant Type Specimens

Herbaria preserve plant specimens that are used for the study of plant life.  Their collections also act as an historical record of changes in various flora.  Type specimens are in great scientific demand because they act as the original vouchers for nomenclature.  They are considered reference objects and enable effective scientific communication by eliminating ambiguities about the particular organism that is referred to.  Global Plants aggregates type specimens online so the plant scientist and student can access collections at worldwide herbaria without having to travel to the repositories where they are housed, or having to borrow them on loan.

Annual Fees

Institutions can gain access to Global Plants through an annual access fee. Through this fee, we are able to sustain, maintain, and improve the database.

Use our calculator to get a quick estimate of the Global Plants annual access fee or contact participation@jstor.org for more information.
